Do Thai and foreign diners rate Bangkok restaurants differently? We checked 878
The usual advice is that visitors score generously and locals are harder to please. We split Google reviews by the language each one was written in and compared the two groups, restaurant by restaurant.
Google reviewers here are mostly Thai-language writers: across 3,848 restaurants with 20+ text reviews, the median share written in a language other than Thai is 8%, and 2,142 are at least 90% Thai.

How we counted
Each Google review carries the language it was written in. We counted reviews with text, grouped them as Thai or not-Thai, and averaged the star rating in each group. A restaurant is compared only if both groups have at least 8 reviews with text. Reviews that are only a star rating have no text, so no language, and are left out.
A restaurant is listed only if the two averages differ by at least 0.5★ and the difference passes a Welch test at z ≥ 3. The second bar matters: with eight reviews a side, a 0.7★ gap appears by luck all the time. We run this test on 878 restaurants at once, so the usual 5% bar would flag roughly 40 of them by chance alone. At z ≥ 3 we expect two or three false flags among the 20 shown.
A gap shows that two groups disagree, not that either is right. These figures cover the restaurants whose full review data we hold, not every restaurant in the city.
